| Format | Best for | Transparency | Typical size vs JPG |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, maximum compatibility | No | 100% |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos, text, sharp edges | Yes | 200–500% for photos |
| WebP | Web photos & graphics | Yes | ≈ 65–75% |
| AVIF | Smallest web photos | Yes | ≈ 50% |
For a website, WebP is the safe default today: all current browsers support it and it is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality. Keep PNG for screenshots and logos with flat colour, and JPG for email attachments and older software.

FAQ
Is WebP lower quality than JPG?
Not at the same visual quality – WebP simply needs fewer bytes. At quality 75–80 most photos look identical.
Why does my PNG photo look huge?
PNG is lossless, so photos with millions of colours compress poorly. Convert photos to JPG or WebP.
